Woods cards second straight 71 at The Open

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland – Thanks to a second consecutive even-par 71, Tiger Woods secured a spot on the weekend at The Open Championship.

That may not sound like much of an accomplishment for the 14-time major winner. But considering he had missed the cut in five of his previous seven major starts, being able to play 36 more holes at Carnoustie is a nice step in his road back to form.

Woods’ second round on Friday consisted of four birdies and four bogeys. He had a chance to finish his round on a high note after a terrific approach at the par-4 18th left him inside 12 feet for birdie. But his putt nicked the right edge of the cup and stayed out.

For the day, Woods hit 73 percent of his fairways and 72 percent of his greens in regulation, but he needed 32 putts. Woods bounced back from two early bogeys with two consecutive birdies in a round that was more promising than perturbing. At even par for the tournament, Woods was safely inside the projected cutline of 2 over when he walked off the 18th green Friday.
